Chinle Az

My hubby and joined the youth to Chinle Az. for a youth rally Friday and Sat.
Here are some photos from the trip.

First it took about 8 hours to get there with stops and everything.
All in all it was a good ride.
Chinle itself is on a Navajo reservation.
Some things that stood out were the elementary school looked like a prison.
Barbwire and all.
Horses roamed near the streets.
They had one stop light and no trees.
Oh, the babies.  There were a lot of them in the church.
I have to admit that I LOVE to pinch (softly) big, chunky cheeks.
I had to sit on my hands every time a momma and her baby walked by.

When we got to the hotel, it took awhile to check in so we all hung out on the courtyard.
And as reservations go, there were dogs.
No joke, about 8-10 dogs came out of no where.
Three of them stayed and hung out with us.

Here's our group in front of the Chinle church.
 Driving through Chinle.
Sat. morning the guys had a men's discipleship class, so the girls and I had breakfast at the hotel and hung out.  I had Native blue corn pancakes...YUM!
Since the guys got done early, we left early and went to Window Rock.
 Here's a Navajo Code Talker.
Here's a funny group shot.
We had a great time.   I would go again.
Another confession...we live near an Indian Reservation and I hate to say this but I have had a hard time talking to them.  It's as if I cannot connect with them.  The Navajos are different, especially the ones in Artie's church.  It felt good.

Mommy Nuggets

I have been wanting to do this for some time.  However, when it comes to learning new things on the computer...well, let's just say that I have made more then one long distant phone calls for help.
(Thanks Anne and Denise.)

I have made some wonderful friends through blogging and wanted to introduce you to three of these ladies through my blog.

First is Patti from Notes from Home.
I was introduced to her through a mutual friend.
As Anne was telling me about Patti, I knew I wanted to get to know her.
I haven't been disappointed.
Patti is funny, honest and loves people.  You can feel it through her blog.
Without further ado, here's Patti...

First of all, thank you Alamama for asking me to be a guest blogger- what an honor to be invited here! If you're not familiar with me, just pour yourself a cup of tea, pull your chair up to the computer and get cozy...we're gonna be besties by the time this is done;)

I asked Alamama to give me some topic ideas that she wanted me to post about. You know- to narrow things down for me? Cuz sometimes I tend to ramble. It comes from having too many kids, I think. My mind is always going in a kazillion directions, and it takes some prompting to reign it in. Staying focused is not a particular strength of mine.

So one of the topics she suggested was mothering a large family. I'm pretty sure Alamama was referring to the amount of children we have. And not their size. Because if you saw us in real life...well, let's just say we're not exactly giving the tall people of the world a run for their money. I like to think of us as vertically challenged. It sounds so much nicer than plain old short doesn't it?

Where was I...oh, yes...staying focused...on....mothering a large family!

By today's standards I guess you could consider us a large sized(as in amount) family. My husband Sam and I have ten children, ranging in ages 22 to 9 months. We are blessed with 7 boys and 3 girls, the youngest of whom, Lily, was born with a lil' something extra. We like to call that "something extra" designer genes, but some people call it Down syndrome ;)

I never planned on being a grand multipara when I was younger. That's latin for a woman who has carried six or more pregnancies to a viable stage. In English it just means crazy.

Sam and I looked at each other shortly after we were married, and nine months later out popped Jason. That's pretty much all it took. I've discovered that if we even think about having another child, my body goes into full blown reproduction mode, no questions asked.

So here we are, ten kids later, and I have to say that I am more blessed today with ten, than I was with two. People always ask us how we do it financially, and honestly? It's a miracle of God. It truly is. We're not living in a mansion, but we have so much more today than we did 20 years ago. I really do believe that God provides for us when we are open to receiving His blessings- whether that be two kids or ten. Where God guides, He provides.

SOOOOO, staying focused...and in conclusion...(don't you just love it when preachers say that? I am sooooo tempted to guffaw loudly when ours does, but being that I'm his wife....that probably wouldn't go over too well.) IN CONCLUSION, I am going to list 3 things I know now, as a mother of many, that I wish I knew when I started out as a mommy.

1)It sounds cliche, but it really does go by too fast. Just blink, and those little bundles of joy in your arms are leaving your nest forever. So cherish each moment- the dirty diapers, the runny noses, the terrible twos and even the frustrating fourteens. And the next time your 3 year old drops an entire roll of toilet paper (your last) in a freshly filled-to-the-brim toilet...smile, count to ten, and think, "this too shall pass." And head straight for the liquor cabinet chocolate. Reese's are my drug-of-choice for these types of situations. King-sized if the toilet was loaded.

2)Less is more. Our kids really don't have to have all the latest and greatest toys and gadgets and doo-dads. My children get more pleasure out of making family memories than any x-box or Intendo (as my 3 year old calls it) could give. As we approach the Christmas season, my littles are peppering me daily with "where are we going to put our tree up this year?" and "are we still gonna decorate gingerbread houses like we do every year?" and "are we going to get the snowman mugs down soon?" It's the little things in life that make sweet memories for our children. And besides, do they really need that new Webkinz... when they can't even remember to take the real dog out?? before he leaves little morsels of chewiness for tiny toddlers to discover?? Methinks not.

3)PRAY. PRAY. PRAY. Mommy fuel is not enough. And it runs out fast. We need God's fuel. Actually, we need God to just turn our gas-guzzling SUV's into Prius's. (how's that for politically correct? hehehe, in real life I drive a 15-passenger Dodge Van. Take that, Swagger Wagon!)

Staying focused....our SUV/Prius transformation only happens through prayer. Daily doses of it. LARGE daily doses. The truth is- I can't parent or teach or nurture or correct or love or guide my children into serving God and being productive adults in and of myself. I need a supernatural infusion, I need Holy Ghost Help to keep me running on all 4 cylinders...in short- I need God. And if I don't take time to get ahold of him, all of my mommy efforts are in vain. When I'm at the end of my rope mentally, I need to pray. When my kids are seeming to go wayward, even in small areas, I need to pray. When I feel overwhelmed and under-appreciated and just maxed out on every front...I need to pray.

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. Philippians 2:4

So those are my little Mommy nuggets of wisdom...not pearls by any stretch, but maybe some food for thought in your daily diet here in bloggyland.

...and hopefully tastier than those morsels my dog Tillie left for me behind the papasan this morning.

Think I'm gonna buy me a Webkinz!!

Service is for a Lifetime

I had a dream last night that I went to Pioneer Woman's ranch and hung out with her and Charlie.
My husband woke this morning from a "war dream".
He has had a few of those before.
Not too many and not too bad.
When we first were married he woke up one night yelling "Get down! Get down!"
That only happened once, but I will never forget it.

My hubby is a hard working man who loves God and his family.
He is very funny, loves to hunt and eat.

He is also a former Marine, a wartime vet.

While he has no physical scars, there are a few marks on his heart.
I have seen his face when asked if he killed anyone over there.
He knows he more than likely did.
He knows he saved lives too.
There was a time, and even every now and then, when if you came up behind him unannounced he had a trained reaction that...well, Marines are trained to do damage with or without a gun.

While my husband doesn't know I am writing this and he doesn't talk about this much at all, today is Veteran's
Day and I know first hand some of the price our men and women have paid.  The price the families left at home have paid.

Happy Veteran's Day to all those who have served and are serving now!  Thank you is just not enough.

Yes or No

One of the blogs I frequent had a wonderful post on "Making your blog more visitor friendly."
I did some changes...hopefully you can all feel more comfortable here.
One of the suggestions was not to have music.
Seems like most of the blog readers out there agree.
I know at least two of you (my faithful readers) have told me you like the music and put my blog on while you are surfing the net or doing house work.  My hubby will put it on to nap!  heehee

SO...my question to you (I want to keep my readers reading & commenting wink wink!):

Yes or No to music on my blog?

(majority rules here, so cast your vote)

Thanks!

going orange and help

Want healthy ways to use that can of pumpkin besides pies and bread?
Add some into your pancakes...
Your fruit shakes...
Your oatmeal...
Cookies...
The list goes on and on.

One can will go along way and add a LOT of vitamins.

Now I need your help.
I need ideas on how to keep my shoes in order.
For awhile I have kept them in their shoe boxes.
Rotating them as the seasons change.
As you can tell taking them out is MUCH easier then putting them back in.
Honestly, I get lazy in a hurry.

I need something that:
won't leave the shoes smushed (I don't think that's even a word.)
will keep them pretty dust free (we have lots here)
and can be easily taken in and out.

Any ideas?
Thanks SO much!

Going Topless...for now

No not me silly!
I bought this little piece, painted it, but it needs a top.
I tried a knob...nope.
 I tried a ball...nope.
 A ball with a flat piece...nope.
Clown piece with and without the flat piece...nope.
 Son put them all together...nope.
The top has a hole into from when it was a leg to something.
I may see if hubby can cut the top section off for me.
Any ideas?

Some Yummies

I made some pretty easy Taco Roll-Ups.
I added the pinto beans.
They were a hit.  (Though not as tasty as leftovers per daughter.)
 And these...Football Girl Cookies.
Yum!  It was also the first time using a silicone baking dish.
Different, but it worked.
One tip on these cookies...let them cool completely before trying to take them out (at least in this type of baking dish).
Can you see the messed up one at the bottom?
Didn't let it cool enough before trying to remove.
Enjoy!  If you want the recipes, please click on the links.

Silly Useless Questions

I know I have more important things to write about,
like the elections,
or the yummy dessert I am making,
our up and coming impact team out of state,
...BUT here are some totally useless questions.

Why doesn't glue stick to the inside of the bottle?

Can you put your mascara on with your mouth closed?
Why is it that rain drops but snow falls?
Why is a boxing ring square?

Why isn't there mouse flavored cat food?
Can you cry under water?
Why is it that when we are driving and looking for an address, we turn the volume down on the radio?

And WELCOME to my new followers!  It really makes my day!

well worth it

The other morning I was awakened by a disturbing dream.
Though I have has similar ones before, this was different.
It was like God was showing me what the devil wanted to do to our son.
(insert dog over the baby squirrel and the mama squirrel posed to pounce on the tree. for some reason i can't get that photo on here.  i tried twice.)

So, I did battle for our son that morning.
Though he was sound asleep in his bed...
this mama squirrel fought and kept her son safe.  And would do it again.
A few nights after that, he came into our room asking us to pray for him to get saved.   Well worth the battle.
The animal photos from here.  The praying pic ??

Noodling Hot Dogs and Leaves

This was one of those recipes you find on a blog from a blog...
We used thin wheat spaghetti noodles.  If i were to make this again, I'd use regular spag. noodles.  The thin ones broke too easy.
 After boiled in water.
I added canned cheese (first time using, and probably last).
Served with my new favorite vegie.
Overall rating...ok.  Probably won't make again, but fun for daughter and I to make.  We had the guys guess how the noodles got in the hot dogs.

Saw this idea here today and had to do it.
I have had this container of dried leaves from Vermont for years just sitting there.
Oh, I forgot to take a photo of the wax.
It's canning wax.
I cut part of a section off and melted.

Put them on foil, as wax paper stuck too much.

 Hang them as you wish.

The fellow in the bottom row on the far left is hubby's grandfather.
This was a quick and addicting craft.
I want to wax everything!
It all looks better in real life.
The yellow leaves are from our yard.
