As I was taking a shower this morning a was thinking that it has been 19 years this month since dear hubby and I met. I thought I would write about our story. So sit back, grab your favorite drink and enjoy...
It was a march evening when the phone rang. My mom's boyfriend (who is now her hubby) answered and then handed me the phone. "It's for you." He said the name... I thought, I know that name. I had written it on a huge welcome home sign for a welcome home parade. I had addressed and received a few letters to that name. I nervously and excitedly answered the phone. I don't remember much of the conversation except his voice and that we must have made plans to meet. His voice was deep and wow, manly. I was almost 18. ( I was still living at home and in school.)
R (my hubby) came over a few days later. It was a sunny day with a few clouds. I wore my baggy purple sweater, jeans ripped in the knees and big hair. He was wearing black acid washed jeans, a black sweater and black sneakers. I have to be honest here; I didn't think he was all that attractive. (He had lost a lot of weight in the war.) He did have these eyes...blue, captivating blue.
We sat on the couch looking at some photos he brought of his time in the desert. We talked a bit. What we said I don't know or how long he stayed. But he called me again, and we met again. I remember him letting me drive his bronco to show him where I went to church. I just got my license a few months prior. I thought "Wow, this guy must really trust me."
After about a week, he went home to see his family. He called while he was there. I felt really special, like there was something there. I don't know just when this happened, but sometime in the beginning I remember sitting on my bed and talking to God about R. I was pretty serious back then, but R was really serious when we first met. I told God that if he is the one, then I need help living with his seriousness. R would prove me wrong very soon after that talk with God.
When R got back we actually went on our first date. It was a mexican resturant in town. Here's where things get serious...
...but I will leave that for the next part! heehee
