Some LOs

I wanted to show you some of me latest LO's. I am really liking having more time to make LOs these days. Not as much as I would like.

I made this one for the SS that I hosted. It's actually a redo of an old Speed Scrap from last year. I made it and then didn't really like the steps I would have to give. So I made another one. BUT I had to go back to the first one. ScrapMatters Roadmap to Scrap 2/19 step were just too similar for me to use the second LO I made. here's the original LO from last year.

Here's the LO I was going to use for the SS then used it for the RTS. I honestly only added like two things!

Scoliosis Part 2

So we went to our first Physical Therapy yesterday. I was mostly talking. The OT (who is from Holland...small world) asked DD a bunch of questions so he could pin point the problem. She was having pain. Come to find out that the pain was not from her scoliosis but from bad posture!

He did a few very easy exercises with her. Told her she needs to do them at home, how to sit in a chair, etc.

She doesn't want to do them. So this morning, in school we all did them and others. Time to be the tough parent. Our DD is usually very good and does what we say. For this, well it's a different story.

Putting Myself Out Here...

I have debated writing this on my public blog. Something keeps telling me to do it.

I write this not for sympathy, but in hope that it will help someone reading this.

About 3-4 weeks ago I discovered that our DD has scoliosis.
I was tieing her bow before church and noticed that one shoulder was bigger then the other. I asked her if she hurt Then I thought...let me check your spine. It was curved. We went to our pastor. We agreed to pray for her each night, believing God to heal her.

Before this, I had been wanting to change the kids' doctor. We had been going to him for 14 years, but he seemed to be getting lax, among other things. So, this pushed me to find another doctor. I found one (a female) who was taking new patients.

A week after we got into the doctor. She referred us to an orthopedic dr. He had x-rays taken. The top of her spine is 20% curved and the bottom 12%. He thinks she is borderline needing a brace, but thinks that physical therapy and exercise will do the trick. He did refer us to a spine dr. about an hour away. We go in the beginning of March.

Monday we (she) have our first physical therapy session. I had to call Dr. R (the ortho Dr.) and request the PT.

Now for the emotional/mental side of the story so far.
I am going to be honest, when I saw her back I was...okay God let's see you move. (Not in a challenging way.) I was a bit down, as any mom will get when something is wrong with her kids. Jan. was a heck of a month as far a health issues go. So by the time this happened I was both weary and like okay let's do this.

DD was really down. She is a young teenage girl, so this made her feel not normal. Ugh, my heart broke when she told me that. She is super modest and did not want all of these dr.s looking at her. I don't blame her, but tried to explain that they are not looking at her funny, but want to help her.

DS was worried is his sister was going to be ok. Even though he can be the biggest pain, he really does love her.

DH was a bit down too.

As christians, this is a test on our faith. You know sometimes you pray for something and there it is. Other times, well you have to wait or your prayer is answered no. We have had a few talks about faith, prayer, God, etc. the last few weeks.

The whole time I have had the thought (the peace) that this is going to be alright. It is almost like God had prepared me for each new step.

I will keep you posted on the latest. Again, I hope that our situation can help you.

It's Not Thursday?

Why does today feel like Thursday? (Thursday is usually the day I feel like doing nothing!) Ugggh!

Maybe it's the clouds (again).
Maybe it's because my DH is still gone with work and we talked for an hour last night.
Maybe it's because the dog woke me up at 5 am.
Maybe it's the alarm that didn't go off.

Anyway, off to take a shower and get this day started!

Bathroom "Redo"

When we bought our house about five years ago, we knew we wanted to redo the bathrooms. However, we needed to tackle our debt first. Unfortunately (I am sort of glad!), we had to half redo our bathroom. We call this the blue bathroom. The tub is blue too!! Anyway, we had a leak in under the vanity that ruined it. (Sorry that I don't have a photo of the vanity.) It was the same color brown wood as the mirror with an off white sink. Here's a photo of the bathroom after the vanity was removed. After (stage one)...I painted the mirror to match the new vanity (from Home Depot). I also painted the tacky brass around the light fixture. The toilet barely fit. DH had to cut part of the handle off! As you can see I needed new decor and towels.

I found these pretty items at Hobby Lobby (I wish I could buy half of the store). Each was 1/2 off!! YES!
As you can see I need a few more items to round off the group, an I got new towels!
I got the hand towel, face cloth, shower curtain, plastic shower curtain, curtain hooks and a bath mat for under $40 at Burkes!
Here's a different view...(at this angle you can't see the kids mess on the other side of the sink!)
Any ideas as to what to do with the wood border?
As always, thanks for looking!

On My Nightstand

One of my loves is reading. I read mainly in bed when I go to sleep. So I usually have a stack of books (library) on the dresser (which is my nightstand).

I am only a few chapters into Part of the Pride and really enjoy it.

First, I think Kevin is either crazy, living on the edge or super gifted. I read mainly non-fiction. This is so not me that it seems like fiction.

Kevin's ability to be with the lions (and other animals) is simply amazing. The book starts out with a tense get to know you lion scene. Then proceeds to talk about his child/teen hood. Can't wait to get to know the lions better. I have watched a few videos of him, and golly he and the lions are just like dogs and humans.

Warning: There is some profanity.

I am half way through the book. It's still good. That's a good thing. Just you just hate it when a book starts out good and then fizzles out? Anyway, Kevin's relationship and understanding of the lions and hyenas is very deep.

I still recommend this book!

Great Video

Have you seen this? Awesome!

Cooking with PW

I am sure you know about the Pioneer Woman. Well, we are hooked! I have made probably about 6-8 of her recipes. my hubby and I like her so much I bought him her cookbook for his b-day.
Last Thursday we had our pastor and his family over (they are leaving :( :( ) I made this dessert for them and wanted to share this one with you.

Mocha Brownies
makes 16 (very rich) servings

Disclaimer, I tried taking photos of just about each step, but I think you'll get the idea. These are very good and rich. I would half my piece and then come back later to finish. Well worth the sugar rush and the crash afterward! Most of the following is from PW's cookbook. Italicized words are mine.

four 1-ounce squares unsweetened chocolate
1/2 pound (2 sticks) butter (watch out Paula Deen)
2 cups sugar
4 large eggs
3 teaspoons vanilla extract
**1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

Mae's Mocha Icing
1/2 pound (2 sticks) butter, softened
5 cups powered sugar
1/4 cup cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 to 3/4 cup brewed coffee (I used the strong brew setting for this), cooled to room temp

1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Spray an 8-inch square baking pan with nonstick spray.

2. To make brownie batter, place the chocolate in a microwave safe bowl. I melted mine in a small sauce pan.

3. Melt the chocolate in the microwave in 30-second increments, being careful not to let it burn. Set it aside and let id cool slightly.
4. In a medium mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar. Beat in the eggs.

5. With the mixer on low speed (I just used the whisk.) drizzle in the melted chocolate. Add the vanilla extract and mix.

6. Add the flour to the bowl and mix until combined; do not over mix.
7. Pour the batter in the baking pan. (I forgot this photo!)
8. Spread it to even out the surface. Bake for 40-45 minutes, until center is no longer soft. (This one too.)
9. Set the brownies aside to cool completely before icing. (**Note: I used self-rising flour. So I think that is why the edges are so high. The center took much longer to cook. Then it sank when cooled. PW's did NOT look like this!)

10. To make the icing, in a large mixing bowl, combine the butter, powdered sugar, cocoa powder, salt and vanilla.
11. Mix until lightly combined, then add 1/2 cup of the coffee.
12. Whip (I did use the electric beater here.) it until the icing is desired consistency. If the icing is overly thick, add 1/4 cup more coffee.
13. It should be very light and fluffy.
14. Ice the cooled brownies, spreading the icing on thick. (It will be very think.) Refrigerate until the icing is firm. Then slice the brownies into squares.

I didn't take any photos of the brownies cut up. I thought PW had these on her blog, but no. If you look close to the photo above you can see her cookbook. In the upper right hand corner there's a photo of her brownies.
Very yummy!
